Fermion Vacuum Effects on Soliton Stability ∗
نویسنده
چکیده
Just as fermion zero modes can alter the degeneracy and quantum numbers of a soliton, fermion energies can affect the form and stability of a nontopological soliton. We discuss the kink in a two-dimensional linear sigma model, and show that, when coupled to fermions, the kink is no longer an extremum of the energy functional. The kink in this model possesses many similarities to the electroweak string in the Weinberg-Salam model.

We explore the effects of a heavy fermion doublet in a simplified version of the standard electroweak theory. We integrate out the doublet and compute the exact effective energy functional of spatially varying gauge and Higgs fields. We perform a variational search for a local minimum of the effective energy and do not find evidence for a soliton carrying the quantum numbers of the decoupled fe...

In several self-coupled quantum field theories when treated in semi-classical limit one obtains solitonic solutions determined by topology of the boundary conditions. Such solutions, e.g. magnetic monopole in unified theories [1] [2] or the skyrme model of hadrons have been proposed as possible non-perturbative bound states which remain stable due to topological quantum numbers. Furthermore whe...
متن کاملThe Soliton Stars Evolution
The evolution of a soliton star filled with fermions is studied in the framework of general relativity. Such a system can be described by the surface tension σ, the bag constant B, and the fermion number density ρ0. Usually one of these parameters prevails in the system and thus affects the spacetime inside the soliton. Whether it is described by Friedman or de Sitter metric depends on the prev...
متن کاملA Heavy Fermion Can Create a Soliton : A 1 + 1 Dimensional Example
We show that quantum effects can stabilize a soliton in a model with no soliton at the classical level. The model has a scalar field chirally coupled to a fermion in 1+1 dimensions. We use a formalism that allows us to calculate the exact one loop fermion contribution to the effective energy for a spatially varying scalar background. This energy includes the contribution from counterterms fixed...
